An A / A-18 E / F model tested in a wind tunnel

An 18 percent aeroelastically-scaled, full span F/A-18 E/F model was tested during multiple wind-tunnel entries in the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. The primary purpose of these entries was to assist in clearing the flight vehicle design of flutter within its operating envelope. The wind-tunnel model was tested on a string and on a cable-mount system (as shown). All lifting surfaces were flutter cleared up to M=1.2 with the model string mounted. The model was then flutter cleared on the cable-mount system to assess the influence of rigid-body dynamics and fuselage flexibility on flutter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an extraordinary moment in aviation research. The image captures an A/A-18 E/F model being rigorously tested in a wind tunnel, specifically the Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. This 18 percent aeroelastically-scaled, full span F/A-18 E/F model underwent multiple entries into the wind tunnel to clear its flight vehicle design of flutter within its operating envelope. The photograph reveals the meticulous setup employed during these tests. The model is seen mounted on both a string and cable system, allowing researchers to assess the influence of rigid-body dynamics and fuselage flexibility on flutter. All lifting surfaces were successfully cleared up to M=1.2 with the model string mounted before further testing on the cable-mount system. In this static and controlled environment, devoid of any human presence, cutting-edge technology meets scientific exploration as physics and aerodynamics take center stage. The wind tunnel serves as a vital laboratory for studying flight dynamics and analyzing aircraft performance. With its vibrant colors and horizontal composition, this photograph beautifully captures the essence of scientific inquiry at work. It provides viewers with a glimpse into the world of aviation research where prototypes like this F/A-18 E/F model undergo rigorous experimentation to ensure their safety and efficiency in real-world conditions.
