Oblique view of the lunar surface

December 1968 - This oblique view of the lunar surface was taken from the Apollo 8 spacecraft looking southward toward Goclenius and other large craters in the Sea of Fertility. Goclenius, the crater in the foreground with a rille-broken flat floor, is about 70 kilometers (45 statute miles) in diameter. One rille, approximately horizontal in this view, crosses both crater rims and the central peak, and, on adjoining Apollo 8 photographs, can be traced several kilometers across the mare surface beyond the high crater wall. In the background, the two large craters with smooth floors are Colombo A (left) and Magelhaens. Magelhaens A, the crater with the irregular floor, is about 35 kilometers (20 statute miles) in diameter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures an oblique view of the lunar surface, taken by the Apollo 8 spacecraft in December 1968. Looking southward towards Goclenius and other large craters in the Sea of Fertility, this image showcases the awe-inspiring beauty and desolation of our moon. In the foreground, we are drawn to Goclenius crater, a massive impact site measuring approximately 70 kilometers (45 statute miles) in diameter. Its flat floor is broken by intricate rilles that cross both its rims and central peak. These rilles extend beyond the high crater wall, tracing their path across several kilometers of mare surface. The background reveals two more prominent craters - Colombo A on the left and Magelhaens. Both feature smooth floors but differ in size; Magelhaens A measures about 35 kilometers (20 statute miles) in diameter. The irregular floor adds a touch of intrigue to this lunar landscape. With no human presence visible, this square image allows us to focus solely on the remarkable terrain texture and detail present on our celestial neighbor's surface. It serves as a reminder of humanity's incredible achievements in space exploration through missions like Apollo 8. This photograph from Stocktrek Images offers an exterior view from space that unveils a moonscape so barren yet rich with geological wonders waiting to be discovered.
