Satellite image of the Swakop River in the western part of Namibia

April 2, 2011 - Natural-color image of the Swakop River in the western part of Namibia.
The Namib Desert stretches along the western coast of southern Africa, a combination of bare rocks and sand dunes. In this perpetually arid environment, rivers flow toward the coast, but they are impermanent rivers that donat necessarily reach the ocean year after year. One of these ephemeral rivers is Swakop, which drains into the Atlantic Ocean just south of Swakopmund. On average, the Swakop River reaches the Atlantic every five years. The Swakop River appears muddy brown. North and south of the river, rocky terrain is beige. Orange-tinted sand dunes border the river in the southwest. South of the Swakop River flows another impermanent river, the Kuiseb. The Kuiseb has historically formed a sharp dividing line between the different terrains of the Namib Desert, preventing sand dunes in the southern Namib from marching northward over rocky ground

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a satellite image of the Swakop River in the western part of Namibia, taken on April 2,2011. The natural-color image beautifully captures the unique landscape of this region. The Namib Desert, stretching along the western coast of southern Africa, is a mesmerizing combination of bare rocks and sand dunes. In this perpetually arid environment, rivers flow towards the coast but are impermanent, not necessarily reaching the ocean every year. One such ephemeral river is Swakop, which drains into the Atlantic Ocean just south of Swakopmund. Remarkably, it takes an average of five years for the Swakop River to reach its destination. In this photograph, we see that the Swakop River appears muddy brown as it winds its way through rocky terrain colored in beige both north and south of it. Alongside lies another impermanent river called Kuiseb which historically acts as a sharp dividing line between different terrains in the Namib Desert. The stunning orange-tinted sand dunes bordering the southwest side add to the enchantment captured by this satellite image. They stand tall against any attempt made by sand dunes from southern Namib to march northward over rocky ground due to Kuiseb's presence. This awe-inspiring print provides us with a glimpse into nature's intricate dance between land and water in one of Earth's most fascinating desert landscapes – all thanks to Stocktrek Images for capturing this moment so perfectly!
