A small plume rises from the summit of Ulawun Volcano on Papua New Guines island
June 10, 2010 - A small plume rises from the summit of Ulawun Volcano on Papua New Guines island of New Britain. Midway down the slopes of Ulawun, vegetation predominates, but volcanic rock coats the slopes near the summit, appearing in charcoal-brown streaks. A white plume blows from the summit toward the west. The plumeas pale color suggests that, of the visible components in the plume, water vapor (rather than volcanic ash) predominates.
Ulawun is a symmetrical stratovolcano and one of the most active in Papua New Guinea

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Ulawun Volcano on Papua New Guinea's island of New Britain. The image showcases a small plume rising from the volcano's summit, creating an ethereal sight against the backdrop of lush vegetation and volcanic rock-covered slopes. The charcoal-brown streaks near the peak reveal the presence of volcanic activity in this region. The white plume blowing westward suggests that water vapor dominates over volcanic ash within the visible components of the plume. Ulawun is renowned as one of Papua New Guinea's most active stratovolcanoes, exhibiting its power through frequent eruptions. The symmetrical shape and composite nature of Ulawun make it a fascinating geological feature. Its caldera and conical structure contribute to its striking appearance amidst the mountainous landscape. This square color image, captured from space by satellite view, provides a unique perspective on this natural wonder. In this photograph taken outdoors during daylight hours, there are no people present, allowing viewers to focus solely on the awe-inspiring beauty and raw energy emanating from Ulawun Volcano. This remarkable image serves as a reminder of both Earth's incredible geoscience and our planet's ever-changing topography shaped by powerful forces such as volcanism.
