William Rysdyks Hambletonian 1865, Father of the Trotting Horse. His employer, Seeley
William Rysdyks Hambletonian 1865, Father of the Trotting Horse. His employer, Seeley, acquired a Charles Kent Mare, which had been permanently injured and was used only for breeding. Sired by Bellfounder, she was of Norfolk Trotter ancestry, a breed noted for its smooth gait. Seeley bred his mare to Abdullah, who was a grandson of Messenger, but a mean and ugly horse. The offspring of the Charles Kent Mare and Abdullah was a bay colt who was to be a keystone in the future of harness racing.
Rysdyk persuaded his employer to sell him the colt and named him Hambletonian. In all, Hambletonian was bred to some 1, 900 mares resulting in 1, 331 foals. Forty of these foals trotted the mile in less than 2 minutes 30 seconds. Among Hambletonians many distinguished heirs were Dexter, Happy Medium, George Wilkes, Dictator, and Electioneer. The blood of Hambletonian is in most of todays distinguished trotters and pacers. The History of Horse Racing by Roger Longrigg, page 236

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary William Rysdyks Hambletonian 1865, widely regarded as the Father of the Trotting Horse. Employed by Seeley, Rysdyk's journey with Hambletonian began when his employer acquired a Charles Kent Mare, a horse that had suffered a permanent injury and was solely used for breeding purposes. With Norfolk Trotter ancestry known for its smooth gait, this mare was bred to Abdullah, an unattractive yet influential grandson of Messenger. The result of this union was a remarkable bay colt who would forever shape the world of harness racing. Recognizing his potential, Rysdyk convinced his employer to sell him the colt and bestowed upon him the name Hambletonian. This decision proved momentous as Hambletonian went on to sire an astounding 1,331 foals from approximately 1,900 mares throughout his lifetime. Hambletonian's legacy is truly unparalleled in equine history. Forty of his descendants achieved incredible feats by trotting a mile in less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Notable heirs such as Dexter, Happy Medium, George Wilkes, Dictator, and Electioneer further solidified their sire's influence on future generations of trotters and pacers. Today, it is impossible to overlook the profound impact that Hambletonian has had on modern-day distinguished horses in both trotting and pacing disciplines. His bloodline continues to flow through many celebrated champions gracing racetracks around the globe—a testament to one horse's extraordinary contribution to equestrian sports.
