Heavy rain was falling when the 34, 000 ton Cunard - White Star Liner " Caronia" largest ship now building in the world, was launched at John Browns Clydebank shipyard today by Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, who was accompanied by her fiance, Lt. Philip Mountbatten, R. N. They were afforded a tumultuous welcome by thousands lining the route as they drove to the yard. The new vessel is 714 feet long, has nine decks, and will be fitted with radar. Clipper-bowed and single-funnelled, the Caronia will form, with the Mauritania, a second string for the two " Queens" on the North Atlantic route. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photo print, heavy rain pours down as the magnificent Cunard-White Star Liner Caronia, the largest ship being built at that time, is launched at John Browns Clydebank shipyard. The prestigious event was graced by Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth and her fiancé Lt. Philip Mountbatten, R. N. , who were warmly welcomed by thousands of onlookers lining the route to the yard. The Caronia, spanning an impressive 714 feet in length with nine decks and equipped with radar technology, showcases its elegant clipper-bowed design and single funnel. Alongside its sister ship Mauritania, it will serve as a second string for the renowned "Queens" on their North Atlantic voyages. Captured in black and white monochrome tones from October 30th, 1947 – a significant moment in twentieth-century history – this image portrays Princess Elizabeth and Lt. Mountbatten standing proudly on the launching platform alongside Cunard White Star officials and distinguished guests. With a construction cost of £3 million pounds sterling (equivalent to approximately £125 million today), this remarkable vessel is poised to become a vital contributor to Britain's economy through dollar earnings. This photograph encapsulates not only the grandeur of ocean liners but also highlights an extraordinary moment when royalty played a role in maritime history.
