EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from May 1st, 1967, we see bank teller Mr. William Treacy diligently loading pound notes into a machine at an Oxford Street branch of the National Provincial Bank in London. This momentous occasion marked the introduction of the innovative "Express Till Service" aimed at revolutionizing customer experience. The machine, designed to facilitate withdrawals of up to £50 at a time, promised to expedite the cashing of cheques for customers. To determine the desired amount, telephone-type dials were conveniently located on the left side. Once set, the machine swiftly delivered the requested notes down a chute without requiring Mr. Treacy or any other teller to manually count them before handing them over to eager customers. This particular day witnessed six branches implementing these cutting-edge machines while many others eagerly awaited their arrival. The photograph beautifully captures both anticipation and excitement as people queued up with hopes of accessing their funds more efficiently than ever before. As we gaze upon this remarkable image frozen in time, it serves as a poignant reminder of how far banking technology has progressed since that historic day in 1967. From humble beginnings like this Express Till Service emerged today's ubiquitous ATMs that have become an integral part of our daily lives—enabling us to effortlessly manage our finances with just a few taps on a screen.
