On Tuesday Mr Edge drive over the new course in a car similar to that with which he established that record, at a time when the car was still regarded with official suspicion and not very long after the days when cars trundle through the streets behind a man with a red flag.
Capable of 80 mph.
Mr Edge, now 69, but looking 10 years younger, talk to those early days today.
The car with which he set is 24 hours record, he said, was a 60 horse power model with six 5 inch cylinders, and was capable of doing 80 miles an hour a very remarkable speed then. Speaking of his famous drive, Mr Edge said he had to change tyres 24 times during the 24 hours.
The bumping on the track was terrible he said. The track program into holes and it was impossible to dodge them
