This startling red sky at dawn owes much to the horrific levels of air pollution which plague the city, together with all the conurbations of Liaoning Province. Sunrise in the city - Shenyang, China (Shenyang, China - December 2000) In this print captured by Jon Bower from Universal Images Group (UIG), we witness a mesmerizing scene of sunrise over the industrial city of Shenyang in northeastern China. The skyline is adorned with towering skyscrapers that pierce through the mysterious hues of pink, mauve, and crimson painted across the sky. However, behind this picturesque view lies a harsh reality. Shenyang is not your typical tourist destination; it is an industrial hub plagued by alarming levels of air pollution. As director of the EU team of scientists measuring pollution at that time, Bower was well aware of the environmental challenges faced by this city and its surrounding areas in Liaoning Province. The turbid and polluted atmosphere creates a dramatic contrast against the calm and tranquil dawn. Dark clouds hang low as smog blankets the morning horizon. Amidst this urban landscape, one can spot dishes on rooftops and aerials reaching towards an uncertain future.
