Montgomery's State House
In February 4, 1861, a Peace Convention met in Washington, D.C. to draft plans to preserve the Union. At the same time, 42 politicians from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida met at the State House in Montgomery, Alabama (shown here in this 1866 engraving). Their purpose was to oppose the Union and formalize plans to establish their own government. Universal Images Group (UIG) manages distribution for many leading specialist agencies worldwide.
