Privateer Captain Tongrelow
In 1706, Captain Tongrelow was one of the most active and most successful privateers operating off the coast between New York and the West Indies. This lithograph by American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle (d. 1911) was published in 1895 in Harper's New Monthly Magazine. It shows Captain Tongrelow, holding his sword, with his crew behind him and the officers and some crew of the ship he has just taken.
