EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a tragic piece of history - a mosaic depicting the Madonna and Child, originally housed in the church of San Gregorio in Messina. The artwork, dating back to the 7th or 8th century, belonged to the Late Byzantine period and exemplified the exquisite beauty of Byzantine art. However, this precious masterpiece met its untimely demise during the devastating earthquake that struck Messina in 1908. The catastrophic event reduced much of the city to ruins, including this cherished mosaic. Its destruction serves as a poignant reminder of both human vulnerability and resilience. The photograph itself was taken around 1900 by Brogi from Alinari. It showcases intricate details of the mosaic before its tragic fate befell it. The image reveals delicate brushstrokes and vibrant colors that once adorned this religious iconography. The central figures depicted are none other than Madonna and Child – an iconic subject within Christian religion. Their serene expressions convey love, compassion, and divine grace. Surrounding them is an array of symbols such as gestures, instruments, inscriptions, writings - all representing different aspects of life and representations associated with Virgin Mary. Despite being lost forever due to natural disaster's wrathful hand on that fateful day over a century ago; this photograph allows us to appreciate not only its artistic significance but also serves as a testament to faithfulness throughout generations who revered these sacred images. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded not only of what was lost but also how art can transcend time itself – preserving moments from centuries past for future generations to admire and reflect upon their profound meaning.
