King Rail Collection

King Rail (Rallidae Gruiformes) is a species of bird in the rail family, and is found in North America, Central America, and parts of South America, and are medium-sized birds with long legs and a short tail. They have brownish-gray upperparts with black barring on the wings and back, white underparts, and a reddish-brown head with white stripes running down its sides. King Rails prefer wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, ponds, and estuaries where they feed on aquatic insects, crustaceans, mollusks, frogs and small fish. During breeding season they construct nests near water's edge or within reed beds to lay their eggs in, and are shy birds that can be difficult to observe due to their secretive behavior but can be heard calling during the day or night from April through August when they are most active.
