Adelie Collection

Adelie penguins are a species of penguin native to Antarctica, and are medium-sized birds, with adults reaching up to 70 cm in height and weighing up to 4 kg. Adelie penguins have black heads, white bellies and a distinctive white ring around their eyes. They also have pink feet and beaks. Adelie penguins live in large colonies on the Antarctic ice shelves and feed mainly on krill, fish, squid, and other small crustaceans found in the Southern Ocean. During breeding season they form monogamous pairs that build nests out of stones or pebbles near the shoreline. The female lays two eggs which both parents take turns incubating until they hatch after about 35 days. After hatching, both parents feed their chicks for several weeks before they fledge at around 10 weeks old. Adelie Penguins are an important part of the Antarctic ecosystem as their presence helps maintain healthy populations of krill which many other species rely on for food as well as providing essential nutrients for plankton growth which is essential for ocean health worldwide.
