Humpback Whale Collection

The Humpback Whale (Balaenopteridae) is a species of baleen whale that can be found in oceans around the world, and are large mammals, typically growing up to 52 feet long and weighing up to 79,000 pounds. They have distinctive features such as a long, curved dorsal fin and knobbly head with bumps called tubercles. Humpbacks are known for their complex songs which can last for hours at a time and travel great distances underwater. Their diet consists mainly of krill, plankton, small fish and crustaceans which they filter from the water using their baleen plates. These whales migrate annually between summer feeding grounds in cold waters near the poles and winter breeding grounds in warmer waters closer to the equator, and are listed as endangered by IUCN due to threats such as entanglement in fishing gear, ship strikes and climate change-induced ocean acidification. Conservation efforts have been successful in some areas but more work needs to be done if this species is going to survive into the future.
