Western Gorilla Collection

The Western Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) is a species of Hominidae mammal found in the tropical forests of Central and West Africa, and is one of two species of gorilla, the other being the Eastern Gorilla, and are typically larger than their eastern counterparts, with males weighing up to 270 kg (600 lb), and are mainly herbivorous, feeding on leaves, stems, fruit and bark. They live in small family groups led by a dominant male known as a silverback. These groups can range from 5 to 30 individuals and travel through their home ranges daily in search of food. Western gorillas have been classified as critically endangered due to poaching for bushmeat and habitat destruction from logging and mining activities. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these animals from extinction.
