Weddell Seal Collection

The Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) is a species of earless seal found in the Antarctic, and is the most southerly distributed mammal in the world, and can be found as far south as 78°S, and are relatively large seals, with adults reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing up to 400 kg. They have a thick layer of blubber which helps them survive in their cold environment. Weddell seals feed mainly on fish, squid and krill, diving up to 600 meters below sea level for food. They breed during the Antarctic summer months from October to February when they give birth on ice floes or fast ice near shorelines. Females are able to reproduce at four years old, while males reach sexual maturity at six years old. The population of Weddell seals has been estimated at around 800,000 individuals but this number is thought to be declining due to climate change and human activities such as fishing and tourism.
