CAN-2582
Barbary Macaque / Barbary Ape / Rock Ape - Sitting in tree with mouth open
Gibraltar
Macaca sylvanus
Calling this species an ape is misleading, for though it lacks a tail, as do apes it is in fact a macaque belonging to the old world monkeys.

Calling Gibraltar Macaque Macaques Monkeys Mouths Vocalising

Say 'Ahh'! This Barbary Macaque knows how to make a statement!

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print by John Cancalosi, we witness the charismatic charm of a Barbary Macaque as it sits perched in a tree with its mouth wide open. With an expression that seems to say "Look at me!", this mischievous monkey steals the show. Hailing from Gibraltar, these fascinating creatures are part of the IUCN Vulnerable species list. While three-quarters of their population resides in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco, they also persist in pockets scattered across northern Morocco and Algeria. Unfortunately, logging and land clearance for agriculture pose significant threats to their survival. Known for their preference for cedar forests at higher altitudes, it's likely that human settlement and persecution have forced them into these habitats. These resourceful macaques have adapted well and survive on a diverse diet consisting of leaves, grass, acorns, and even caterpillars. Living in groups ranging from 7 to 40 individuals including adult females, males, and offspring, Barbary Macaques enjoy socializing just as much as vocalizing. Their unique communication style involves using their mouths to call out messages or simply express themselves. So next time you need some inspiration or want to add a touch of wildness to your space - look no further than this incredible print capturing the playful spirit of our furry friends!
