Meet the Mertens Water Monitor - The Ultimate Rockstar of Northern Australia!
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo, we witness the incredible life of DH-3463, a Mertens Water Monitor who knows how to make a splash! Found basking on sun-kissed rocks along small streams and creeks in tropical northern Australia, this reptilian superstar is always ready for an aquatic adventure. With its superb swimming skills and remarkable breath-holding ability, DH-3463 dives into action during the Wet Season. Feasting on a gourmet menu of fish, frogs, shrimps, and crabs, it's no wonder this monitor lizard has become the envy of all underwater foodies! But wait - there's more! When the Dry Season arrives and streams transform into mere pools or dry up completely, our versatile hero adapts its diet like a true culinary chameleon. From insects to bird eggs, spiders to ants, small mammals to carrion – nothing escapes its discerning palate. And let's not forget about family matters! DH-3463 takes parenthood seriously by laying 10-14 precious eggs in burrows that are 50cm deep. With patience as their virtue (and perhaps some parental nerves), these little ones hatch anywhere from 182-316 days later depending on temperature conditions. So next time you find yourself exploring Manning Gorge in Western Australia's Kimberleys region, keep an eye out for our scaly celebrity. Just remember not to mention commercial use – after
