This stunning print captures the essence of the Tasmanian Pademelon, an adult standing on its hind legs in the lush temperate rainforest of Mount Field National Park in Tasmania, Australia. The Pademelon, scientifically known as Thylogale billardierii, is also referred to as the billardieres pouched weasel and is a resident macropod of Australia's eastern forests.
These unique creatures have low-slung, compact bodies that are perfect for navigating through thick undergrowth. They spend their days sheltering and foraging in the forest, with most of their eating done from late afternoon to early morning. Using a network of runaways when moving to and from their feeding grounds, they can travel several kilometers in a single night.
The females typically have one young which matures by 14 months old. Once found on mainland Australia as well, the Tasmanian Pademelon now only exists in Tasmania and larger islands of Bass Strait due to being hunted for fur and leather trade. They were also once a food source for both Aboriginals and Europeans.
