EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph taken by David Price at Emiras Stadium on January 31, 2010, Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal Football Club looks on in disappointment as Manchester United's Wayne Rooney celebrates scoring the third goal in a Barclays Premier League match between the two rivals. The Belgian defender, who had joined Arsenal from Ajax Amsterdam the previous summer, had a tough debut season in the English top flight, and this defeat to Manchester United, who went on to win the league title that season, was a particularly disappointing result for the Gunners. Vermaelen, wearing the Arsenal captain's armband, had been brought in to strengthen Arsenal's defense and provide leadership on the pitch. However, the team struggled to keep clean sheets, and this match was no exception. Manchester United's attacking trio of Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Dimitar Berbatov proved too much for the Arsenal backline, with Rooney scoring a brace and setting up another goal for Berbatov. Despite the defeat, Vermaelen remained a popular figure among Arsenal fans for his determination and leadership qualities. He went on to become a regular in the Arsenal team, making over 150 appearances for the club before moving to Barcelona in 2014. This photograph serves as a reminder of a challenging season for Arsenal and the resilience of their players, particularly their captain, in the face of adversity. The atmosphere at Emirates Stadium that day was electric, with both sets of fans creating a cacophony of noise throughout the match. The tension between these two historic rivals was palpable, and this photograph captures the intensity and passion of the Barclays Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United.
