Antoine Coypel Collection

Antoine Coypel (1661-1722) was a French painter and art theorist of the Baroque period. He was born in Paris to a family of artists, and his father, Noel Coypel, was an important painter at the court of Louis XIV. Antoine studied under his father and then with Charles Le Brun at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. His works were mainly religious paintings for churches and royal palaces, as well as portraits. He also wrote several treatises on painting theory which were influential in France during the 18th century. In 1715 he became director of the Académie Royale, where he taught many students including François Boucher and Jean-Baptiste Oudry.
