George Catlin Canvas Print Collection

George Catlin (1796-1872) was an American painter, author, and traveler who specialized in portraits of Native Americans. He is best known for his paintings of the Plains Indians in the 1830s. Catlin was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and studied law before turning to painting. He traveled extensively throughout North America with his wife and children, visiting many Indian tribes to paint their portraits. His work was highly praised by critics and he became a popular artist among American collectors. He wrote several books about his travels, including "Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs and Conditions of North American Indians" (1841). Catlin's works are now held in numerous museums around the world, including The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and The British Museum in London.
