Benjamin West (1738-1820) was an American-born painter of historical, religious, and mythological subjects. He was one of the first American painters to gain international recognition and is considered to be the father of American painting. West studied in Italy under Pompeo Batoni and later in London under Sir Joshua Reynolds. His works often featured classical themes with a modern twist, such as his famous painting The Death of General Wolfe (1770). He also painted portraits for many prominent figures including King George III and Queen Charlotte. In addition to his paintings, West wrote extensively on art theory and history. He was appointed Historical Painter to King George III in 1772 and later became President of the Royal Academy from 1792 until his death in 1820.
