He was one of the first American painters to gain international recognition and is considered to be the father of American painting. West studied in Italy under Pompeo Batoni and later in London under Sir Joshua Reynolds. His works often featured classical themes with a modern twist, such as his famous painting The Death of General Wolfe (1770). He also painted portraits for many prominent figures including King George III and Queen Charlotte. In addition to his paintings, West wrote extensively on art theory and history.
