Granite rock formations - Murphys Haystacks, Mortana - South Australia
Eyre Peninsulas Murphys Haystacks are among the oldest rocks in Australia but they re slowly eroding away.
They are of a tumulus form of weathered granite outcrop. They are made of a pink, massive, coarsely equigranular rock consisting mostly of quartz and orthoclase. Their appearance may be due to a combination of erosion by underground rainwater and then by subsequent weathering after they were exposed. Most of the pillars emerge without a break from the underlying granite. Their structural base may be of orthogonal or vertically-aligned sheet jointing.
The rocks shapes are believed to be 1.6 billion years old, as the rock itself was believed to be 3 billion years old.
" The actual granite itself is very ancient, but the form of the Haystacks is much more recent, so you can probably go back to the time of the dinosaurs and the weathering of the landscapes."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Granite rock formations known as Murphys Haystacks in Mortana, South Australia. These ancient rocks, believed to be among the oldest in Australia, are slowly eroding away, making them a truly remarkable sight to behold. The tumulus form of these weathered granite outcrops is a testament to millions of years of natural processes. Composed mainly of pink quartz and orthoclase, these massive and coarsely equigranular rocks have been shaped by underground rainwater erosion followed by subsequent weathering after being exposed. What makes these haystack-like formations even more fascinating is their estimated age. While the actual granite itself dates back an astonishing 3 billion years, their distinctive shapes are thought to be around 1.6 billion years old. This means that they have witnessed dramatic changes in landscapes throughout Earth's history, possibly even during the time when dinosaurs roamed our planet. As you gaze upon this mesmerizing image captured by Robbie Goodall, let yourself imagine standing amidst these ancient giants and marvel at how nature has sculpted such awe-inspiring structures over countless millennia. The fragility and transience of Murphys Haystacks serve as a reminder that even the most enduring elements can eventually succumb to time's relentless passage.
