This striking image captures the moment of triumph for Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren Bridport as he stands on the quarterdeck of his flagship, HMS Defiance, during the Battle of Groix on August 23, 1795. The French fleet, led by Admiral Morard de Galles, was attempting to break through the British blockade of Brest harbor when they were intercepted by Bridport's squadron. In the ensuing engagement, Bridport's superior tactics and firepower proved decisive, resulting in the capture of three French warships: the 74-gun Ville de Paris, the 74-gun Formidable, and the 64-gun Montagnese. The victory was a significant morale boost for the British navy during the early years of the French Revolutionary Wars, and helped to maintain the blockade of Brest, preventing the French from launching further attacks on British interests. Bridport's reputation as a skilled and daring naval commander was cemented by this victory, and he went on to serve with distinction throughout the wars, eventually becoming First Sea Lord in 1811. This print, produced in the late 18th or early 19th century, provides a vivid and dramatic depiction of the battle and the moment of triumph for Bridport and the British navy.
