EDITORS COMMENTS
16 February 1798: The French March into Rome - A Pivotal Moment in the Italian Campaign This evocative image captures the momentous entry of the French army into the ancient city of Rome on 16 February 1798. The Italian Campaign, also known as the War of the First Coalition, marked a significant turning point in the French Revolution's foreign policy. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, had sparked a wave of revolutionary fervor across Europe. In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte, a young and ambitious French general, led his troops to victory against the Austrian and Sardinian forces in Italy, marking the beginning of the Italian Campaign. By early 1798, the French army, now under the command of Napoleon's rival, General Berthier, approached Rome, which was then ruled by the Pope, Pius VI. The Papal States, weakened by internal strife and external pressures, were unable to effectively resist the French invasion. The image shows the French soldiers, clad in their distinctive blue and white uniforms, marching triumphantly into the city, with the Colosseum and other ancient ruins visible in the background. The event marked the end of the Papal States' temporal power and the beginning of the Roman Republic, which lasted until 1814. The French occupation of Rome was a significant moment in the spread of revolutionary ideas throughout Europe, and the Italian Campaign paved the way for the French domination of Italy for the next two decades. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact of the French Revolution on European history.
