EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1754, showcasing the magnificent Old South Sea House in all its glory. Located on the corner of Bishopsgate Street and Threadneedle Street in the City of London, England, this iconic building served as the headquarters for the renowned South Sea Company. The image transports us to a bustling day in eighteenth-century London. A large group of people can be seen going about their daily activities on the streets surrounding this local landmark. Horses trot along the road while mature men and mid-adult women navigate through the crowd. The pencil drawing captures every intricate detail of this historic structure, from its grand architecture to its imposing presence. The Old South Sea House stands tall amidst a sea of other buildings that make up this vibrant cityscape. Tragically, just over seven decades after this snapshot was taken, disaster struck when fire consumed this architectural gem in 1826. However, thanks to Ken Welsh's skillful illustration and attention to detail, we are able to admire and appreciate what once stood proudly at that very spot. This print serves as a testament to both our fascination with history and our desire to preserve these significant landmarks for future generations. It reminds us that even though time may change cities and landscapes beyond recognition, there will always be ways for us to connect with our past through art and imagery like this one.
