EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the house of one of England's most celebrated literary figures, John Milton. Located in the Barbican area of London, this historic residence served as both a sanctuary for creativity and a hub for intellectual discourse. John Milton, renowned for his contributions as an English poet, polemicist, man of letters, and civil servant during the 17th century, found solace within these walls. It was here that he penned some of his most influential works such as "Paradise Lost" and "Areopagitica" shaping the course of English literature. Sadly, this iconic house met its demise in 1864 when it was demolished. However, through this archival photograph captured over two decades prior to its destruction, we are transported back in time to witness its grandeur. London Pictures published this image in their 1890 collection with great care to preserve history's essence. The intricate details showcased in this print allow us to appreciate not only Milton's former abode but also gain insight into the architectural style prevalent during that era. As we gaze upon this snapshot from yesteryears' London skyline - where past meets present - we are reminded of John Milton's enduring legacy and his significant contributions to literature that continue to inspire generations today.
