Tower Bridge Collection

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames, and is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name. The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of these forces is reacted by tension rods located within the bridge's upper walkways. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in both towers. Opened in 1894, Tower Bridge remains an iconic symbol of London and a major tourist attraction with over 40 million visitors since 1982 and has been designated as a Grade I listed building since 1970 and a Scheduled Monument since 1973.
