George Grenville Collection

George Grenville (1712-1770) was a British politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1763 to 1765. He was born in London, England and educated at Eton College and Oxford University. He entered politics in 1741 as a Member of Parliament for Buckinghamshire, eventually becoming Prime Minister in 1763. His tenure was marked by his attempt to raise revenue through taxes on the American colonies, which ultimately led to the American Revolution. He also oversaw the passage of several important acts such as The Sugar Act (1764), The Stamp Act (1765), and The Declaratory Act (1766). Despite his successes, he lost popularity due to his unpopular policies toward America and resigned from office in 1765. After leaving office he continued to serve as an MP until his death in 1770. His legacy is remembered for both its successes and failures, but ultimately it is remembered for its role in sparking the American Revolution.
