James Callaghan Collection

James Callaghan was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1979. He was born in 1912 in Portsmouth, England and educated at Oxford University. He began his political career in 1945 when he was elected to the House of Commons as a Labour Party Member of Parliament for Cardiff South East. During his time as Prime Minister, he sought to reduce industrial unrest and inflation while maintaining full employment. His government also introduced several social reforms such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which improved workplace safety standards across Britain. Despite these successes, Callaghan's government was defeated by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Party in 1979 due to economic difficulties caused by high levels of public spending and inflation. After leaving office, he remained an active member of the House of Lords until his death in 2005 aged 92.
