EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "A human fireball" we are transported back to a dramatic incident that occurred in Barzesto, a village in the upper Val di Scalve, Italy. The image depicts the aftermath of a shocking accident that took place during a school class. As the teacher, Iamundi, was diligently imparting knowledge to her students, chaos ensued when the ceiling above suddenly collapsed. In an unfortunate twist of fate, a young girl plummeted through the crumbling roof and landed on top of her teacher. Miraculously, despite suffering from bruises and injuries herself, the girl managed to survive relatively unscathed. The impact of this unexpected event left both teacher and student reeling with shock. The scene captured by Achille Beltrame in his vivid illustration for Courier Sunday on 6th March 1927 showcases the devastation caused by this calamity. The image portrays dust-filled air as debris litters the classroom floor. Broken floorboards and fallen blackboards serve as haunting reminders of what had just transpired moments before. Amidst all this chaos stands Iamundi - shaken but resilient - trying to gather her composure amidst the rubble. This powerful artwork serves as a reminder of how quickly life can change and how resilience can emerge even in times of great adversity. It is a testament to both tragedy and triumph within one single frame—a snapshot frozen in time forever etched into our collective memory.
