This print showcases a Short-tailed coatee worn by Cornets Brown, who served in the esteemed Wiltshire Yeomanry around 1799. The coatee, made of exquisite fabric, is a testament to the rich history and tradition of British military attire during the late 18th century. The Wiltshire Yeomanry was established in 1794 as a defense force against potential invasion during the tumultuous French Revolutionary War. By 1796, it comprised troops from various towns including Devizes, Chippenham, Swindon, and Marlborough. Not only did they protect Britain's shores but also played an essential role in quelling popular disturbances. One notable event that exemplified their dedication occurred during the unrest following the rejection of the 1830 Reform Act.
