This print showcases a stunning George II Red & Gilt-Japanned Secretaire Cabinet, dating back to around 1730. Crafted from exquisite japanned wood, this piece is a true testament to the artistry of the English School in the 18th century. The cabinet's intricate design features Chinese pagodas and architectural complexes, figures engaged in hunting and leisurely activities, lush landscapes teeming with foliage, as well as an array of animals and birds. Its arched broken cavetto cornice serves as a striking focal point, crowned by a small pedestal adorned with a turned flaming finial. Opening up to reveal its hidden treasures, this secretaire cabinet boasts mirrored cupboard doors embellished with engraved brass escutcheons. Within lies an arrangement of drawers and pigeon-holes surrounding a central cupboard door inset with another mirror-plate. Fluted pilasters add an elegant touch to the overall composition. Further exploration reveals a fall-front bureau that unveils yet another arrangement above a sliding panel concealing yet another compartment. The waved apron adds fluidity to its design while bun feet provide stability. Although some elements have been restored over time - such as one replaced mirror plate - the left mirror plate remains possibly original but re-silvered. The decoration has been refreshed, breathing new life into this remarkable piece.
