The duel is part of Russian literature: the famous poet Alexander Pushkin perishes, and the writer Ivan Turgenev describes one in his novel Fathers and Sons (1862). From 1895, Repine created several canvases on this theme that fascinated him. He documents himself on duels between officers with a military lawyer friend and endeavours in his paintings to depict the moods of duelists. In 1897, he successfully presented at the second Venice International Exhibition a large version of this composition, subtitled " Forgive me!".); Photo © Sylvain Collet

The Duel, 1897
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas painting by Ilya Efimovich Repin. This powerful artwork, housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, depicts a dramatic scene from Russian literature. Inspired by Ivan Turgenev's novel "Fathers and Sons". Repin explores the theme of duels that fascinated him. In this particular composition, Repin skillfully captures the intense emotions and moods of the duelists. The artist's personal involvement in witnessing duels between officers with a military lawyer friend lends authenticity to his portrayal. The large version of this painting was successfully presented at the second Venice International Exhibition in 1897 under the subtitle "Forgive me!". The image showcases two men confronting each other with pistols drawn, ready for battle. It symbolizes not only physical conflict but also deeper themes such as honor, pride, and mortality. As one man falls defeated to his death, we are reminded of the tragic consequences that can arise from such confrontations. Repin's attention to detail and mastery of technique bring life to every brushstroke in this remarkable piece of art. Through his skillful rendering of light and shadow and his ability to capture human expression, he immerses viewers into this pivotal moment frozen in time. "The Duel" serves as both an exploration into Russian literary history and a testament to Repin's artistic prowess. It stands as a reminder of humanity's capacity for conflict while simultaneously inviting contemplation on its consequences.
