Portrait of the 'Hilversum', c.1655 (graphite)
7342023 Portrait of the 'Hilversum', c.1655 (graphite) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 34.2x41.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
The drawing is an 'offset' (a process similar to tracing) from another drawing, perhaps from PAH3827 the 'Jaarsveld', which has then been completely worked up. The 'Hilversum', 62 guns, was probably built in 1655 in Amsterdam when this drawing may have been made. On the tafferel (the upper part of the stern) is a house with a causeway leading up to it. This is a rare view of the manor house of Hilversum which was destroyed by fire in the 18th century, after which the ship was named. Above are the arms of Amsterdam. Below, on the counter (the overhanging part of the stern immediately above the water) there are two shields: one on the left with a lion rampant, the one on the right with crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam. Above, on the upper counter, there is a row of seven portrait busts.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite portrait of the 'Hilversum' by Willem van de Velde, the Elder captures the intricate details of this 62-gun ship built in Amsterdam around 1655. The drawing is a meticulous 'offset' from another work, possibly the 'Jaarsveld', and showcases the grandeur of this vessel with its elaborate stern featuring a house and causeway.
The manor house of Hilversum, depicted on the tafferel of the ship, was tragically destroyed by fire in the 18th century, leading to the naming of this impressive vessel. The arms of Amsterdam proudly adorn the upper part of the stern, while shields representing both a lion rampant and crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam can be seen below.
What truly sets this portrait apart are seven detailed portrait busts adorning the upper counter, adding a touch of elegance to an already magnificent depiction. This rare view offers a glimpse into maritime history and craftsmanship at its finest.
Displayed at London's National Maritime Museum, this artwork serves as a testament to van de Velde's skill as an artist and his ability to capture not just ships but also their rich histories and significance within naval culture.
