5921071 Knocked out German Panzer Mark IV tank, North Africa, 1944 (b/w photo); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Knocked out German Panzer Mark IV tank, 1944.
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, 1944.
The 17.3 ton Mk IV was armed with a short barrelled 75 mm gun and fitted with 30 mm armour plate. Manoeuvrable and reliable, it was ideal for supporting infantry and used with great effect during the German attacks on Poland, France and the Low Countries, and during the early stages of the Soviet campaign. Later in the war it was found that the short barrelled 75 mm gun lacked the muzzle velocity to penetrate the armour of the Soviet T34 tank so a long barrelled 75 mm gun became standard in the Mark IV.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the aftermath of a fierce battle in North Africa during 1944. In the center of the frame lies a knocked out German Panzer Mark IV tank, its once formidable presence now reduced to a hulking mass of twisted metal. The image, taken by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, showcases the destructive power of war. The Panzer Mark IV was an iconic German tank known for its reliability and maneuverability. Armed with a short-barreled 75 mm gun and fitted with 30 mm armor plate, it played a crucial role in supporting infantry during various campaigns. However, as the war progressed, it became evident that this weapon lacked the firepower needed to penetrate Soviet T34 tanks' armor. Despite its limitations against more advanced adversaries, this particular tank had undoubtedly seen action on multiple fronts before meeting its demise in North Africa. Its battered appearance serves as a testament to the intense battles fought during World War Two. This print is part of an album compiled by Major W. H. J Sale from his time serving with the 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters). Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it offers viewers a glimpse into history and reminds us of both the destructive nature and technological advancements brought about by warfare.
