This print takes us back to a significant moment in the history of France. It depicts an illustration by Maurice Leloir, showcasing the new law introduced by Cardinal Richelieu on June 2,1626. This groundbreaking edit imposed the death penalty for engaging in duels. The scene captured is none other than a famous duel that took place despite the ban, on June 21,1627, at the Place Royale (now known as Place des Vosges) in Paris. The participants were Francois de Montmorency Bouteville and Francois d Harcourt, Marquis de Beuvron. In this dramatic image, we witness these two adversaries engaged in combat under broad daylight. Their swords clash fiercely as they disregard the consequences set forth by Cardinal Richelieu's law. Little did they know that their actions would have dire consequences. Tragically, Montmorency Bouteville paid with his life for defying this newly established legislation; he was decapitated shortly after this duel. On the other hand, Beuvron managed to escape to England in order to evade punishment. Maurice Leloir's skillful illustration brings this historical event to life once again. Preserved within a private collection today but originally featured in "Richelieu" published in 1901, it serves as a reminder of both the harsh penalties imposed during those times and the audacity displayed by individuals who dared challenge them.
