A Beluchi Beggar, Kandahar, 1880 circa (b / w photo)

5922165 A Beluchi Beggar, Kandahar, 1880 circa (b/w photo) by Simpson, Benjamin (1831-1923); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: A Beluchi Beggar, Kandahar, 1880.
Photograph by Benjamin Simpson (1831-1923), 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1880.
Kandahar, in south-east Afghanistan, had been captured by the British without a struggle on 8 January 1879. Until the summer of 1880 the occupation was relatively uneventful but following Ayub Khans victory at Maiwand on 27 July, the Kandahar force was besieged. The siege was lifted when Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts led a force from Kabul to Kandahar. On 1 September 1880 he defeated Ayub Khan outside Kandahar and relieved the garrison, effectively ending the war. Simpson took a remarkable series of photographs of Kandahar and its occupants in the weeks and months after Roberts victory when the British occupation of the city was finally secure.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of a Beluchi beggar in Kandahar, circa 1880. Taken by Benjamin Simpson during the 2nd Afghan War, this photograph is part of a remarkable series that documents life in Kandahar after the British occupation. Kandahar, located in southeast Afghanistan, had been captured by the British without resistance in January 1879. However, following Ayub Khan's victory at Maiwand on July 27th, the British forces found themselves besieged. It was not until Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts led a force from Kabul to Kandahar that the siege was lifted and victory achieved on September 1st, effectively ending the war. Simpson's photographs provide us with a glimpse into this pivotal period. In this particular image, we see a Beluchi beggar who likely endured many hardships during these turbulent times. The details captured by Simpson's lens allow us to study his weathered face and tattered clothing as he sits on what appears to be a street corner. This print is part of an album containing 34 photographs taken by Simpson during his time in Kandahar. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, it serves as both historical documentation and artistic representation of life during this significant chapter in Afghan history.
