Most of 1st Airborne Divisions landing zones were 11 kilometres (7 miles) from the bridge at Arnhem and only one battalion managed to reach the objective while the rest of the division was squeezed into a pocket around Oosterbeek to the west.

This print captures a pivotal moment in history as the brave men of the 1st Airborne Division push forward into Arnhem on September 19,1944. Taken by Sergeant D. M. Smith, this powerful image showcases the determination and courage displayed by these soldiers during World War Two. The landing zones for most of the division were located approximately 11 kilometers away from Arnhem's bridge. Despite facing immense challenges, only one battalion managed to reach their objective while the rest of the division found themselves confined to a pocket around Oosterbeek to the west. From a collection of British official photographs relating to the 1st Airborne Division and associated with Operation MARKET GARDEN, this photograph offers a glimpse into an intense airborne operation. The men can be seen equipped with artillery and other essential equipment as they press forward towards their mission.
