EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent belt or pouch ornament from the 12th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry, dating back to the late 19th century. Crafted with intricate detail and adorned in gilt, this regal piece features the regimental monogram BC over XII, topped by an Imperial Crown. Surrounding the monogram are delicate scrolls bearing battle and campaign honors for Abyssinia, Charasia, Peiwar Kotal, Kabul 1879, and Afghanistan 1878-80. The history behind this remarkable artifact is equally fascinating. The 12th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry was established in 1861 following its formation as an irregular cavalry unit during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Throughout its existence, it participated in significant military campaigns such as the Abyssinian campaign of 1868 and played a crucial role in the Second Afghan War (1878-1880). After serving valiantly during World War One (1914-1918) in Mesopotamia, this esteemed regiment merged with the prestigious 11th Prince of Wales's Own Lancers to form the illustrious 5th King Edward's Own Probyn's Horse in 1921. Preserved within London's National Army Museum as part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection, this extraordinary artifact stands as a testament to both British colonial history and India's rich military heritage. Its exquisite craftsmanship and symbolic significance make it a truly awe-inspiring piece that continues to captivate viewers even today.
