5926798 Chapka, officer, Duke of Cornwalls (Loyal Meneage) Yeomanry, 1816 (metal, paper and cloth) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Chapka, officer, Duke of Cornwalls (Loyal Meneage) Yeomanry, 1816.
Grey metal crown covered with japanned black brown paper, scarlet cloth sides stiffened with metal rod. Black patented leather skull and peaks and a red and white plume. The chapka plate bears the Prince of Waless feathers emerging from a coronet, with a die-struck scroll bearing the regimental title.
The chapka, or lance cap, was an item of headdress originally worn by Polish lancer regiments. British forces encountered Polish lancers in French service during the Napoleonic Wars. The British Armys lancer regiments, formed after the Waterloo campaign, subsequently adopted the chapka. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Chapka, officer, Duke of Cornwalls (Loyal Meneage) Yeomanry, 1816. Created by the British School in the 19th century and currently housed at the National Army Museum in London, this extraordinary artifact is composed of metal, paper, and cloth. The Chapka features a grey metal crown covered with japanned black brown paper and scarlet cloth sides stiffened with a metal rod. Its skull and peaks are made from black patented leather while adorned with a striking red and white plume. The most eye-catching element is undoubtedly the chapka plate bearing the Prince of Wales's feathers emerging from a coronet, accompanied by a die-struck scroll displaying the regimental title. Originally worn by Polish lancer regiments, this headdress was adopted by British forces after encountering Polish lancers during the Napoleonic Wars. Following their formation after Waterloo campaign, British Army's lancer regiments embraced the chapka as part of their uniform. Notably, it was in September 1816 that the Duke of Cornwall's (Loyal Meneage) Yeomanry decided to adopt this distinctive headgear. As one of the earliest known chapkas for a Yeomanry unit, this artifact holds immense historical significance. It serves as an enduring symbol not only of military fashion but also represents cultural exchange between nations during times of conflict. This print allows us to appreciate its intricate details and marvel at its place within our shared heritage.
