An English third-rate and fourth-rate under easy sail, c.1677 (pencil, wash)
7341989 An English third-rate and fourth-rate under easy sail, c.1677 (pencil, wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 27.8x40.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde the Elder
In the left foreground, viewed from close on the starboard bow, is a third-rate before a light breeze under fore course and fore and main topsails. Further away on the right is a fourth-rate seen from more on the beam, carrying her mizzen as well.
The drawing may be on the same paper as the series done on the journey of William and Mary to Holland in 1677. Although the third-rate might be the 'Montagu' as rebuilt, the other ship is too large for the 'Mermaid' which was the only other two-decker in the escort. The drawing is cut at the top and so does not show the third-rate's main topmasthead.
Freely drawn in thick pencil, strengthened on the hulls with sharp pencil work, which is meticulous in its detail, but is faulty in the rendering of the head and tuck of the ship on the right. It is approximately dated by the watermark.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning pencil and wash print by Willem van de Velde the Elder captures the grace and power of two English third-rate and fourth-rate ships under easy sail in 1677. The meticulous detail in this artwork, from the billowing sails to the intricate rigging, transports viewers back to a time when these majestic vessels ruled the seas.
In the foreground, a third-rate ship is depicted sailing before a light breeze with its fore course and fore and main topsails unfurled. In the distance on the right, a fourth-rate ship can be seen carrying its mizzen as well. The artist's skillful use of thick pencil strokes brings these ships to life, while sharp pencil work highlights every curve and line of their hulls.
Although some details may not be entirely accurate, such as the rendering of one ship's head and tuck, this drawing remains a testament to van de Velde's talent for capturing maritime scenes with precision and artistry. Whether you're an admirer of naval history or simply appreciate fine art, this print is sure to captivate your imagination with its depiction of seafaring adventure in centuries past.
