EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a close-up view of the Ghuznee Medal 1839 awarded to Private Hugh Henzey, a member of the 13th (The 1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry). This metal medal, created by the British School in the 19th century, is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. The Ghuznee Medal was bestowed upon soldiers who played an active role in storming the fortress of Ghuznee from July 21 to July 23,1839. This significant event took place during the first Afghan War between 1839 and 1842. It holds historical importance as it was only the second campaign-specific medal awarded to all ranks within the British Army, with the Waterloo Medal being its predecessor. Commissioned by Shah Shuja following his installation on Afghanistan's throne instead of Dost Mohammed, this medal symbolizes recognition for those who aided him during this pivotal moment. The intricate design and craftsmanship reflect its significance as a token of bravery and service. This photograph showcases not only an impressive piece of military history but also highlights an important chapter in international conflicts. The fortification depicted on this medal serves as a reminder of past confrontations that have shaped our world today.
