EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Knights badge of the Order of the Tower and Sword, Portugal, belonging to Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Scott Lillie from the Grenadier Guards. Created around 1814, this metal badge is a testament to Lillie's remarkable military career during the Peninsular War. Lillie's journey began when he joined the British Army in 1807 as an ensign in the 6th Regiment of Foot. In 1808, he participated in the first expedition to Portugal and subsequently joined the Portuguese Army as a captain in the Lusitanian Legion. Throughout his service, Lillie played a crucial role in defending Portugal against French invaders. Promoted to lieutenant in 1810, Lillie fought valiantly at significant battles such as Busaco and was instrumental during retreats like Torres Vedras. Notably, he commanded the 7th Portuguese Cacadores and led them through numerous engagements including Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes, and Toulouse. At Toulouse's Battle in 1814, tragedy struck as Lillie sustained severe injuries that left him abandoned on the battlefield for two days before being rescued. Despite this harrowing experience, his bravery remained unmatched. The Knights badge represented here holds immense historical significance as it symbolizes King John VI's revival of The Royal Order of The Tower and Sword—an honor bestowed upon those who aided Portugal during its struggle against French occupation. This extraordinary photograph not only captures an exquisite piece of military regalia but also immortalizes Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Scott Lillie's unwavering dedication to serving his country with valor and distinction.
