Officers Sabretache, 4th (or The Queens Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, 1815 circa

5920079 Officers Sabretache, 4th (or The Queens Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, 1815 circa by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Officers Sabretache, 4th (or The Queens Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, 1815 circa.
The tight-fitting uniform of the cavalry did not allow for pockets. Documents and other small items were carried in the sabretache. The German for pocket or pouch was tasche, thus the sabretache was the pocket attached to the sword or the sabre.
This example is thought to have been worn by the future Major-General Norcliffe who served as a lieutenant and captain in the 4th Dragoons between 1808 and 1821.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Officers Sabretache of the 4th (or The Queens Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, dating back to 1815. The British School from the 19th century beautifully captured this historical artifact, which is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. During this era, cavalry uniforms were designed to be tight-fitting and lacked pockets. To overcome this challenge, officers carried their important documents and small items in a sabretache. Interestingly, the term "sabretache" derived from the German word "tasche" meaning pocket or pouch. It was essentially a pocket attached to their sword or sabre. This particular example is believed to have been worn by Major-General Norcliffe during his time as a lieutenant and captain in the 4th Dragoons between 1808 and 1821. Its intricate design features an elegant monogram and badge insignia that symbolize honor and distinction. The print not only captures the exquisite craftsmanship of this piece but also provides us with a glimpse into military fashion history. It serves as a reminder of how even seemingly small details like pockets played significant roles in practicality for soldiers on duty. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we can appreciate this remarkable artwork that pays homage to both officer regalia and military functionality from centuries past.
