EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Pugri badge worn by the Malay State Guides between 1896 and 1901. Crafted from bi-metal, this badge features crossed kris daggers enclosed within a garter that proudly displays the unit's title, "Malay States Guides" topped off with a majestic Guelphic Crown. The formation of the Malay State Guides in 1896 marked an important milestone in military evolution. Originating from the Perak Armed Police, which later became known as the 1st Perak Sikhs, this paramilitary unit was under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Sandilands Frowd Walker. The force consisted of infantry and artillery companies led by both British and Sikh officers. During World War One, members of the Malay State Guides served valiantly with distinction. They were deployed to support the Aden Field Force and provided reinforcements for Singapore. However, following their honorable service, these brave men were disbanded in 1919. This extraordinary Pugri badge is part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection at London's National Army Museum. Its intricate design pays homage to not only its wearers but also to their rich heritage and commitment to duty. As we admire this significant artifact captured through Bridgeman Images' lens, let us remember those who proudly wore it on their uniforms - embodying courage, loyalty, and sacrifice during a pivotal era in history.
