Study of a damlooper and a smalschip lying alongside one another, c.1665 (graphite, grey wash)
7342233 Study of a damlooper and a smalschip lying alongside one another, c.1665 (graphite, grey wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 34.8x52.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
This composition shows a damlooper in the foreground, seen from a point just before the starboard beam. This viewpoint facilitates a view of the tiller, the long horizontal bar connected to the rudder, and details as far as back as the end of the hatch. The part showing the stern sheets (or sails) has been torn off. The ship's mast, as well as her spritsail and her staysail, have been drawn in. On the damlooper's left is a smalschip: only her port quarter and part of her deck and cabin-top are showing. Beneath the damlooper's bow is a small sailing dinghy known as a skiff. The drawing has been approximately dated by its style.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite and grey wash print by Willem van de Velde, the Elder captures a detailed study of a damlooper and a smalschip lying alongside one another in 1665. The composition provides a unique perspective from just before the starboard beam of the damlooper, showcasing intricate details such as the tiller, mast, spritsail, staysail, and even a small sailing dinghy known as a skiff below the bow.
The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in every stroke, bringing these historic vessels to life on paper. The torn-off stern sheets of the damlooper add an element of realism and depth to the scene, while the partially visible smalschip on its left offers a glimpse into maritime life during this period.
Van de Velde's skillful rendering of light and shadow creates a sense of movement within the still image, making it feel as though these ships are ready to set sail at any moment. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a valuable historical document, preserving the beauty and complexity of 17th-century naval architecture for generations to come.
